Equipment Spotlight: The Chair
The Chair is the smallest yet most challenging piece of equipment, because it requires more of you to stabilize and provides less assistance than the Reformers or Towers.
Joseph Pilates designed the chair in the 1930’s as a compact, dual-purpose home gym apparatus that functioned as real furniture. It used springs and a pedal to offer full-body, Reformer-like workouts in small NY apartments, embodying his philosophy of accessible, functional movement. A friend of Mr. Pilates said his dining room was full of these chairs.

To convert the Chair from furniture to exercise apparatus, all one needed to do was to flip it over, attach the inner springs to the hooks, and what was once the seat of the chair now became a spring-loaded pedal that could be used for dozens of exercises for the whole body.
At Pilates by the Bay we have a total of 6 chairs. 3 are split-pedal with a dowel that is removable allowing for the arms and legs to move the pedal one-at-time. One of our chairs is a Combo Chair with removable handles. Each type of chair allows different exercises for more versatility.

Get Ready for March MATness
Pilates by the Bay pays tribute to Joseph Pilates’ traditional Mat exercises with a month-long challenge
March MATness was created by Pilates teacher Benjamin Degenhardt as a way to celebrate the original Pilates Mat sequence of one exercise at a time, in its traditional order. Each day, he shared a movement and had conversations around the form, the flow, and the intention behind it. What started as a simple idea has grown into a global celebration of the Mat work, and we’re excited to join the fun and bring it to our Pilates by the Bay community this March!
Based on the traditional Mat exercises as documented by Joseph Pilates in his book Return to Life through Contrology, it’s an artful practice of 34 body-weight movements that are invigorating and effective in conditioning the body.
Sneak Peak: On March 1 we kick everything off by highlighting the Hundred! There are hundreds of ways to perform the Hundred on the mat or any of the Pilates equipment. Stay tuned to see ways we’ve done them at the studio!

Move of the Month: Threading the Needle
Lengthen, strengthen, and breathe into your side body with Threading the Needle on the Chair. This thoracic rotation stretches the shoulders, upper back, and neck while boosting spinal mobility.
It’s a beautiful reminder that strength and fluidity can exist together.
