Pilates by the Bay Featured on Shop Jersey Shore Podcast

We’re excited to share that Michele Toscano, owner of Pilates by the Bay in Toms River, NJ, recently joined Lisa Mazzuca on the Shop Jersey Shore Podcast. In this engaging conversation, Michele discussed her personal journey with Pilates, how she came to own the studio, the unique programs available, and her passion for mentoring the next generation of Pilates instructors.

A Pilates Studio Rooted in the Community

Pilates by the Bay has been serving Toms River and surrounding communities since 2008, making it one of the area’s longest-standing Pilates studios. Michele is proud to be the studio’s third owner, having started as a client herself before becoming an instructor and eventually stepping into ownership. Today, the studio thrives as a welcoming, close-knit environment where clients receive individualized attention in small group classes, private sessions, or duets.

Classes focus on using Pilates apparatus such as the Reformer, Tower, Chair, and Barrel. These specialized pieces of equipment are designed to align the body properly, support correct form, and make Pilates accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Michele and her team of instructors emphasize awareness, posture, and mindful movement, ensuring clients can take what they learn in class and apply it to daily life.

A Path to Becoming a Pilates Instructor

One of the highlights of the conversation was Pilates by the Bay’s comprehensive teacher training program, offered in partnership with Evolve Your Teaching. This program blends flexible online learning with in-person seminars at the Toms River studio, giving aspiring instructors hands-on experience with all of the Pilates apparatus. Apprentices receive mentorship from Michele while participating in live workshops led by Master Instructor Jessica Spillane.

The training provides an opportunity for participants both near and far to pursue a career in Pilates instruction, gain practical teaching experience, and work toward a comprehensive certification. Michele explained that apprentices also lead practice classes at the studio, offering new clients the chance to enjoy free or reduced-cost sessions while helping future instructors develop their skills.

Breaking Myths About Pilates

During the podcast, Michele addressed some common misconceptions about Pilates. Many people assume Pilates is only for dancers or that mat classes are easier than equipment sessions. In reality, Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates—who developed equipment using springs to assist rehabilitation for patients—and it was designed for anyone seeking strength, flexibility, and better movement.

Pilates by the Bay attracts a wide variety of clients, particularly adults seeking a sustainable way to improve posture, reduce pain, and build strength. Michele emphasized that Pilates is adaptable, with modifications available for all fitness levels.

Looking Ahead and Staying Involved Locally

Michele also shared her love for being part of the Jersey Shore community. From participating in local networking events to supporting charitable organizations like the Wingman Foundation and The Pittie Project, Pilates by the Bay remains dedicated to giving back. The studio regularly hosts toy and food drives and supports fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Upcoming opportunities include trial classes for those curious about Pilates and expanded apprentice-led sessions. These trial classes introduce newcomers to the equipment, allowing them to experience the Reformer and Tower in a friendly, small group setting.

Experience Pilates by the Bay

Pilates by the Bay is more than a workout studio—it’s a supportive community where clients strengthen their bodies, reduce stress, and learn to move better. For those considering a career shift or looking to supplement their income, the Pilates teacher training program offers a clear and flexible pathway into the profession.
